Confession: Who Is Your Target Audience

Who are you speaking to?

How old are they?

What demographic?

I can understand how as a writer this is important.  You want to know who you are speaking to.  Especially if you intend to monetize.  The people you are targeting determine the market that you are hitting…………….brands care a great deal about it and it’s probably how they are choosing you to represent them if they ask you to write up something or promote for them.

My biggest concern about this is that I do not under any circumstances care to limit myself to an audience.  There is a possibility that this attitude can limit me but I want to make sure that I’m speaking to hearts and minds above anything else.  There is no age limit that you can put down to determine someone’s level of maturity or your ability to connect to them through the words that you have put down.  There are things I can say that hit my 12 year old son or even someone that is 45……………….and I haven’t reached that point yet.  To resonate is to resonate and there is no way of getting around that.

Even though I have decided to stand by my decision that I will not be honing in on a specific group of people, it still gives me a bit of pause.  As I grow I know how important it is to know that information.  Even in my focus group we are talking about the anxiety I feel in deciding to narrow down the target audience or even whether to be specific in topics.  I just knew that coming in to this years ago when I first began, I didn’t want to limit myself.  I didn’t want to be in a box of any sort.  I wanted to be flexible.  I know I have some topic strengths but as a writer who is continuing to grow and develop, you can grow much strength and have very few limitations unless you apply them to yourself.

I know I’ll have my ups and downs with writing and they will continue to come and go.  You have really good days and some not so good days in all that you do.  But as I always say, it’s so important to remember why you are doing something.  When I sit down in front of a keyboard I’m attempting to use the gift I have to reach whoever is listening and understands.  Even those who may not but happen to gain clarity through my words.  No matter how this may affect my base, I am clear that my direction is not limited to an age group, demographic or gender.  I just want those to follow who like the way I deliver.

Think about it and decide what works best for you and be clear to do whatever it is that you want………… matter how many times looking at someone else makes you rethink your direction.

Until Next Time Lovies!
